ROMPING START FOR PERLIS IN CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS 2011

MUAR (13 Dec 2011) – Perlis made a romping start to the inaugural Champion of Champions when they blasted Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) 5-0 on the first match day of Group B that was played at the Muar Town Council field this afternoon.

A brace each from Mohd Zafuan Azman (14th and 21st minute) and Wan Mohd Fitri Wan Zalani (47th and 52nd minute) put Perlis well on the way as Ammar Akhmali Alias scored the other in the 25th minute to ensure them the lead in the group.

“We were a little tired at the start of the game due to long travelling time but the lads got their act together to score two quick goals and after that, it was all ours,” said Mohd Shahabuddin Kadir, the chief coach of Perlis.

“We scored the most goals out of the four games that were played today and that is a good sign for the team.”

In an intense east coast derby, a late strike from Muhammad Shaiful Alias in the 43rd minute of play gave Kelantan a hard fought 2-1 win over Terengganu.

Earlier, Kelantan’s lead off Wan Alif Aiman Rosmaidi in the seventh minute was cancelled out by Muhammad Wa'ie Mubin Che Mohd Zin in the 32nd minute.

In the meantime in the earlier Group A matches that was played in the morning, Selangor battled to a 1-1 draw against Pulau Pinang while powerhouse Kedah also fared no better when they were held to the same scoreline by a resolute CIMB-YFA.

The Klang Valley side was served with a rude awakening early in the 26th minute when Muhammad Syuaid Mohamad gave Pulau Pinang the lead with a shot from inside the box. The score at the end of the first half was 1-0 to the advantage of the islanders.

But Selangor maintained their composure and were quick to pounce on the equalizer just four minutes after the restart off Muhammad Khair Azri Mohd Faizalo to share the spoils.

The script was the same for Kedah when they were trailing CIMB-YFA 1-0 at the end of the first half after Saiful Iskandar Saiful Azlan blasted in the lead just 13 minutes into the tie.

But the pep talk during the break must have had the desired effect as just two minutes into the second half, it allowed Muhammad Imran Idris to ran into the CIMB box for a shot to the far post for the well-deserved equalizer.

“We could have won the game but winning the one point was important. The boys played well although in the second half, we lost moments of concentration,” said K. Mughilan, the chief coach of CIMB.

The Champion of Champions, under the chairmanship of Dato’ Razali Ibrahim, the deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, is part of the National Football Development Committee which was formed directly under the government under the guidance of Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Education, the National Sports Council (NSC) and also the FA of Malaysia.
