PRESS RELEASE
CHAMPION
OF CHAMPIONS 2011

‘RONALDO’ CONFIDENT KEDAH WILL WIN GROUP A ENROUTE TO SEMI-FINALS

MUAR (14 Dec 2011) – He might not have scored a single goal in two matches but Mohd Irwan Syah Yaakub or Ronaldo is confident that the goals will come and that Kedah will win Group A enroute to making the semi-finals of the Champion of Champions 2011 this year.

After two matches in Group A this morning, Kedah picked up their first win when they beat Pulau Pinang 3-2, following their 1-1 draw against CIMB-YFA yesterday. They now have the same four points with CIMB-YFA although the northerners lead the group on better goal difference.

Third is Selangor while Pulau Pinang are at the bottom.

“Sure I have not scored a single in two matches but there’s still tomorrow. I scored six goals in the MyKids tournament last month, so defenders are a little wary of me,” said the precocious 11-year-old, who is called Ronaldo after his idol.

“Yes I admire Cristiano Ronaldo tremendously. I think that he is a great player and I hope that I will be able to play like him.”

In the match against Pulau Pinang this morning, Kedah were quick to grab the lead off Mohd Izwan Iskandar Ghazali in the eighth minute. But the islanders fought back with two quick goals in two minutes off Athari Aqil Fitri Maktar (11th minute) and Muhamad Azmeer Aris Nor Rashid (12th) to steal to a 2-1 lead.

But Kedah kept up the pressure and they were duly rewarded when Pulau Pinang’s Muhammad Faiq Syahmi Saiful Bahari scored an own goal on 23 minute for the score to stand at 2-2.

With just three minutes left to the end of the first half, Mohamad Imran Idris made good on a cross from ‘Ronaldo’ for the win.

In the other match, CIMB-YFA were stretched the distance before they were able to beat Selangor 1-0. The only goal of the game came in the 31st minute of play from Aliff Haiqal Lokman Hakim Lau.

The decision as to which team will win Group A will be decided tomorrow oon the third match day when Kedah take on Selangor while CIMB-YFA play Pulau Pinang.

In the meantime in Group B, Kelantan seem poised to emerge as the group winner when they picked up their second win in the tournament – this time by beating big-scoring Perlis 2-0.

The Northern Lions had begun their campaign yesterday on a confident note when they blasted MBPJ FC 5-0. But against Kelantan this evening, they found it hard going where in the end before succumbing to two goals in the second half.

Kelantan ensured the full points off goals from Muhamad Nazirul Hasif Mailang in the 34th minute and Muhd Shahril Shukri in the 44th minute.

“We did not play as well as could but we did enough to win the game and the full points. That is more important,” said Ronzi Zainal, the chief coach of Kelantan afterwards.

In the meantime, Terengganu had two late goals to thank for their close 3-2 win over MBPJ FC. The win was the first in Group B.

After taking the early lead in the sixth minute through Muzamir Zaid, the east coast side relaxed somewhat to allow MBPJ FC to score twice off Haikal Iskandar Abdul Malek (15th minute) and Khairul El-Malek Kharul Nizar (19th minute). The score at the half was 2-1 to the advantage of MBPJ FC.

But Terengganu pushed harder in the second half and they managed to squeeze in the equaliser off Muhammad Isa Raman in the 42nd minute before nailing the winner from Muhammad Nor Hakimi Ramli two minutes to the end.

Tomorrow, Kelantan will take on MBPJ FC while Terengganu will play Perlis t decide which team will join Kelantan in the semi-finals.
