Perlis are Champion of Champions

PERLIS won the inaugural Champion of Champions football tournament when they held their nerve to beat Kelantan 4-3 on sudden death penalties in the final at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium yesterday.


The score at the end of the regulatory 60 minutes was 0-0 and it was 3-3 at the end of the five penalty shootouts.

The first attempt at goal in sudden death fell to Kelantan but striker Ahmad Tasnim Nasir shot straight to Perlis keeper Shahzwan Shafri instead.

Perlis' Muhammad Akmal Salleh the stepped up to send the ball to the right of the goal well beyond the reach of Kelantan custodian Muhammad Azri Abdul Ghani.

Perlis coach Mohd Shahabuddin Kadir said: "The game was very close and when it came down to penalties, it was really anybody's title."

With the rain showing no relief since Saturday night, the quality of the game yesterday was affected as neither team could display their hard running short passing game.

The usually nippy Kelantan winger Wan Alif Aiman Rosmaidi rarely got the ball into the Perlis box where at the end of the first half, striker Muhammad Syaiful Alias only got one shot in which was saved by Shazwan.

The win for Perlis saw them bagging RM10,000 while Kelantan walked off with RM7,500.

Kedah scored some consolation when they won third place after beating Penang 2-0 in the game that was played earlier in the morning.

Kedah's goals were scored by Faez Faizal Nor in the 37th minute and Mohd Izwan Ghazali four minutes later. Kedah bagged RM5,000 while Penang took home RM2,500.

The Champion of Champions is supported by the National Football Development Committee, which is chaired by Datuk Razali Ibrahim, the deputy Sports Minister.

PERLIS WIN CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS 2011 ON SUDDEN DEATH PENALTIES


MUAR (18 Dec 2011) – An ecstatic Perlis side won the inaugural title of Champion of Champions 2011 when they held their nerves to beat Kelantan 4-3 on sudden death penalties in the final that was played at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium this evening.

“Of course, we are very happy to win the title as it has more than made up for the loss in the semi-finals of the MyKid National Championship last month to Kedah,” said Perlis coach Mohd Shahabuddin Kadir after the game.

“The game was very close and when it came down to the penalties, it was really anybody’s title. But we are glad that we came out tops.”

“We have the players but perhaps next year, we will have to prepare earlier for this tournament,” said Mohd Izani Mahmood, the chief coach of Kelantan.

“We played well in the final, it was just too bad that we could not play our usual game due to the slipper ground.”

In the meantime, Kedah scored some consolation when they won third place in the tournament after beating Pulau Pinang 2-0 in the game that was played earlier in the morning.

PERLIS TAKE ON KELANTAN IN FINAL OF CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS 2011


MUAR (17 Dec 2011) – Perlis delivered a surprise in their semi-final clash with a 1-0 win over favourites Kedah to set up a date against Kelantan in the final of the Champion of Champions 2011 tomorrow afternoon. Kelantan beat Pulau Pinang with a resounding 4-0 in the other semi-final tie.

For the Northern Lions, the only goal coming off Mohd Zafuan Azman’s free kick which left Kedah keeper Mohd Sufail Sofian totally stranded in the seventh minute was more satisfactory.

It provided Perlis with the perfect revenge for their loss in the final of the MyKids National Football Championship 2011 to the same Kedah side last month in Perak.

“It is good to be in two finals out of two tournaments,” said Mohd Shahabuddin Kadir, the chief coach of Perlis. “And for us, it is more satisfactory considering that we have beaten the team which denied us the title last month.

“The key to this game is discipline and the lads showed lots of it today. Sure we won by a single goal but we totally deserved it.”

While Kedah were confident, it was obvious that the early Perlis goal left their tactical play in tatters. And while they did come close when Mohd Shahril Morad banged the upright in the second half, that was the closest they got as Perlis stood firm at the back.

On the other hand Kelantan did not suffer such drama when they totally outclassed Pulau Pinang 4-0 in the second semi-final of the day.

The islanders tried hard to put up a strong defence but a through pass in the 15th minute off Muhd Shahril Shukri was deftly picked up by striker Muhamad Syaiful Alias for a shot past Pulau Pinang keeper T. Shahheeswaran.

In the 28th minute, Nik Akif Syahiran Nikmat then doubled the lead with a looping shot for Kelantan to be 2-0 in front at the break. With Pulau Pinang slowing down, Kelantan then nailed two further goals off Muhd Asyraf Hanif Zaimi in the 56th minute and then Wan Alif Aiman Rosmaidi deep in injury time for the win.

“We are very well prepared for this tournament and I told the players that it would be a mistake to underestimate anyone,” said Ronzi Zainal, the chief coach of Kelantan.

“Now we are a step closer to the title and we should approach the game the same way as we did today against Pulau Pinang – full of hard work.”

The final of the Champion of Champions 2011 will be played at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium tomorrow at 3.45pm.

Coach Rosle Md Derus said that the team will have their work cut out against Kedah considering that the latter is one of the favourites in the tournament this year.

“It will be a close game but we feel confident especially no one gave us a chance to make the next round,” said Rosle. “But we showed that we can be competitive as we did in the last match (against Terengganu).”

The game between Kedah and Perlis will be played at 8am at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium tomorrow morning.
